One-day event

A common liana around here (Entre Rios, Bahia, Brazil, 12S 38W), with gradually hardening shell-like inner sepals, hiding a multi-staminate (ca 400!) flowers, and opening for pollination for one day only. Ants are seemingly interested in them and stood guard on many flowers whenever I inspected them over a three-day period (Jan 22 to 25, 2007).

The plant (Davilla sessilifolia Fraga ined., from Dilleniaceae) is in the process of being published.
